| The ChangePoint
Substance Abuse Treatment for Latino Youth focuses on family-based
alcohol and drug abuse treatment for Latino youths ages 13-18. A grant
from Multnomah County allows ChangePoint to offer free treatment for
up to 11 Latino teenagers. The program is family-based from the initial
contact with the teenage client. |

|
The family is viewed as an
interdependent system that includes all family members. ChangePoint
counselors work with the family as an important resource that provides
strength and support to the recovering teenage family member. A combination
of treatment modalities, including individual, family and multifamily
therapy is included in the program. |
| Key Elements of the Substance
Abuse for Latino Youth Program |
| Treatment. The treatment
approach for substance abuse is founded on evidence-based studies
and combines cognitive behavioral treatment with a strong emphasis
on motivational interviewing. Outpatient treatment is provided at
Level 0.5, I, and II. All treatment is culturally competent and bilingual
(Spanish and English). A key component of the treatment approach is
to integrate individual therapy with family and multi-family therapies.
The program aims at improving communication between family members,
providing skill-building and teaching conflict-resolution. |
| Counseling.
Treatment includes group sessions as well as individual counseling
as required on a case by case basis/family situation. The program
offers alcohol and drug education and treatment, tobacco cessation,
recreational skill training and positive cultural identification. |
| Special importance
is placed on skill building aimed at preventing future substance abuse.
Skill building (personal, social and cultural) therapies focus on
relapse prevention and include the understanding and identification
of primary risk factors related to substance abuse. |
| Case Management.
Treatment includes case management and referrals to employment
readiness agencies, housing services, mental health counseling, mutual
help groups, psychiatric care and medical care as needed. |
| Pro-social activities:
The program also includes work with the youth and family towards developing
clean and pro-social positive activities related to sports, entertainment
and recreation. |
