Substance Abuse and Care for Women (SACW) is a gender-responsive
treatment program that provides a safe, supportive and woman-nurturing
environment that encourages trust, bonding and connection. The philosophy
of the SACW program is based on theories that fit the psychological
and social needs of women, including womens life experiences
and reality. The treatment modalities are culturally competent and
strongly relational, and address issues such as physical, sexual and
emotional abuse, family relationships, substance abuse, eating disorders,
and other concurrent problems. |

Key Elements
of the ChangePoint Substance Abuse and Care for Women Program
|
 |
|
Treatment. As with all
other ChangePoint programs, the treatment approach for SAWC clients
is founded on evidence-based studies and combines cognitive behavioral
treatment with a strong emphasis on motivational interviewing. The
SAWC treatment also emphasizes strength or asset-based approach and
skill-building, as well as a strong focus on activities that reward
empowerment and self-efficacy. |
| |
Counseling.
Treatment includes group sessions as well as individual counseling
as required on a case by case basis. Counseling involves the utilization
of gender-responsive assessment tools and individualized treatment
plans that match appropriate treatment with the identified needs and
assets of each client. ChangePoint counselors act as female role models
and mentors that reflect the racial or ethnic and cultural backgrounds
of the SACW clients. |
| Relapse Prevention
Therapy. The program places special importance on skill building
aimed at enhancing recovery and maintaining behavior that insures
a happier and healthier lifestyle. Skill building (personal and social)
therapies focusing on relapse prevention include the understanding
and identification of primary risk factors related to substance abuse
and related problems. |
| Education.
The ChangePoint SAWC includes education and counseling relating to
health (e.g., pregnancy, nutrition, stress management, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis,
sexually transmitted diseases) and mental health (e.g., post-traumatic
stress disorder and depression). Education on parenting, child development
and relationships or reunification with children is provided if relevant. |
| Case Management.
Treatment includes case management and referrals to employment readiness
agencies, housing services, child welfare, parenting, day treatment
and aftercare, mental health counseling, psychiatric care and medical
care as needed. |
