When
you toss a pebble into a pond,
at the point of contact you cause a change;
a change that ripples out in all directions.
And these waves of change are felt
by whatever else they happen to touch.
This simple image symbolizes both
the vision and responsibility of who we are.

Matrix
Model For Methamphetamine Abusers
|
| |
| The
Matrix Model is an evidence-based Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
created by The Matrix Institute in Los Angeles. It has been tested
through research, showing favorable outcomes. It is a manualized treatment
program that is based on cognitive behavioral therapy models, relapse
prevention and skill training, all presented in a client-centered,
Motivational Interviewing style. The ChangePoint Matrix Model for
Methamphetamine Abusers is being provided under the auspices of the
Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), which is providing funding
support for the program. Treatment includes educational sessions for
client families and other support people. Skill training groups focus
on recovery and relapse prevention. The main objective of the program
is to provide clients with a behavioral structure and daily skills
enabling the eventual development of a clean and sober lifestyle.

Key
Elements of the Matrix Model for Methamphetamine Abusers Program
|
 |
|
Effective Treatment.
Research studies indicate that the Matrix model is very effective
in treating various addictions. Matrix clients, compared with Outpatient
Treatment as Usual (TAU) were 38% more likely to stay in treatment.
Matrix clients were 27% more likely to complete treatment. In some
sites of the research clinical trial (total of 8 sites) the Matrix
condition was associated with significantly longer periods of abstinence.
Treatment completion was about 41%. (Rawson et al, Society for the
Study of Addiction, 2004) |

Education. Treatment
includes weekly family education sessions as well ongoing social support
and aftercare. Dialogue between family members is stimulated and participants
awareness is raised on issues faced by those who abuse or are addicted
to drugs and alcohol. Educational material and client handbook are
simple and repetitive and the recovery language is designed to unify
the program in a seamless, integrated manner. |
| Client
Participation. The Matrix Model uses graduates of the treatment
program as co-leaders for groups. Co-leaders help other clients get
better by sharing their experience in recovery and their hope. Clients
and counselors follow a bilingual (English and Spanish) curriculum
patient workbook. |
|
Skill Training. Early Recovery Skills and Relapse Prevention
Skills use dots for clean days and teach clients
ways to schedule and structure their days. Clients participate in
numerous sessions learning relapse prevention skills, coping skills,
and ways to achieve stable sobriety. Treatment is three times per
week for at least four months. |
