| This is program
is designed to help men who have a history of violence and abuse associated
with their intimate relationships. The majority of clients who participate
in this program are court-mandated. Therefore, the program is also
structured to assist the client in meeting his legal requirements.
The program offers clients positive alternatives to abusive behaviors
and assists them in developing healthier, safer and happier relationships
based on mutual respect and equality. The primary goal of the program
is to increase the safety of women and their children by assisting
men in changing their violent and abusive behaviors. The length of
the ChangePoint domestic violence program is typically 9-12 months,
depending upon attendance, level of awareness of domestic violence
issues and successful completion of program competencies. Clients
attend sessions on a weekly basis. |

Key Elements
of the Domestic Violence Intervention Program
|
| Education.
The nature and effects of domestic violence are presented and discussed
in group sessions. The various manifestations of domestic violence,
including battering, emotional and verbal attacks, destruction of
property, stalking, intimidation, sexual coercion, financial manipulation
and other controlling behaviors are examined. Emphasis is placed on
how these behaviors affect others in the family and community. |
|
| Attitude and
Belief Change. In these sessions, clients are challenged to change
the attitudes and beliefs they use to support their abuse of women.
The program investigates many of the prevalent beliefs and attitudes
of our society, which support male dominance and the use of power
and aggression as an acceptable means of resolving conflict, and works
to establish new, non-aggressive attitudes that are respectful of
women and encourage men to accept responsibility for their own behaviors.
|
| Mutual Respect
and Equality. This segment of the program assists men in developing
long-term strategies for achieving the mutual respect, trust and support
that is essential in maintaining non-abusive relationships. This includes
developing ways for equally sharing responsibility in family decisions,
finances and parenting. |
| Substance Abuse
Treatment. Standard certified substance abuse treatment is available
concurrently within the domestic violence intervention treatment curriculum
for those who require it. This allows clients to address their substance
abuse problems and domestic violence issues under one umbrella program.
All clients regardless of substance abuse history are required to
remain abstinent from all drugs and alcohol throughout the program
and are monitored with random urinalysis testing. |
| Parenting.
We also offer classes to help men explore their parenting style in
the context of domestic violence. These classes focus on the impact
of domestic violence on children, especially those who may have witnessed
domestic violence, and also include parenting basics as well as problems
such as non-abusive discipline, parenting during separation and parenting
with another parent who may have a different parenting style. |
| Assistance to
those affected by domestic violence clients. Every effort is made
to offer assistance, information and referral of appropriate services
to other involved parties, including female partners, family members
and others affected by the behaviors of the men who are participating
in the domestic violence program. ChangePoint counselors receive confidential
calls from affected persons once proper release forms have been signed
by the domestic violence client. |
