When you toss a pebble into a pond,
at the point of contact you cause a change;

a change that ripples out in all directions.
And these waves of change are felt
by whatever else they happen to touch.
This simple image symbolizes both
the vision and responsibility of who we are.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Outpatient Chemical Dependency Treatment?
Outpatient chemical dependency treatment is a multi-faceted process. Basically, it is a therapeutic learning experience to help people with drug and alcohol problems gain control of their lives. A typical course of treatment may include education on addictions, training on relapse prevention skills, interpreting and understanding one’s thoughts, feelings and actions, attending self-help meetings, assessing one’s drug and alcohol use and developing an after-care plan.
How would I know if I needed treatment?
The use and misuse of drugs and alcohol are relative concepts. For a person with low tolerance to these substances, a pattern of even minimal use can cause immediate symptoms of addiction. In a person with a higher degree of tolerance the symptoms of problem usage may not appear for quite a long time. Generally speaking, regardless the level of use by any one individual, treatment would be indicated if the person is experiencing certain symptoms indicative of addiction. These may include health issues, relationship problems, legal entanglements, financial problems and family dysfunction.
What type of treatment does ChangePoint offer?
All of our programs are designed to assist clients with reducing and eventually eliminating their substance abuse problems. We accomplish this by having clients undergo an educational process about the effects of substances on their nervous system, body and behavior. Special attention is given to the affect of addiction on clients’ families, work and other people. All clients undergo a Self-Assessment process that allows our clients to see the impact that substance abuse has had on their lives. The group therapy process Includes teaching clients relapse prevention skills and other life skills conducive to recovery from addiction. Take home assignments further assist in this process.
I have heard that a person needs to want to change in order to be successful in treatment. Is this true?
While the desire to change and improve oneself is important to succeed in treatment, it is not necessarily true that this desire needs to be present before coming to treatment. ChangePoint uses a treatment methodology that is heavily based in the concepts and theories of Motivational Interviewing, a style of working with clients that takes into account the client’s readiness for change. For clients with low internal motivation, we apply techniques designed to engage their internal desire to change and help the client experience small successes so that the possibility of greater change becomes more evident. For clients who already are self-motivated to change, the process may be quicker and require a lower level of care.
What is meant by the term Levels of Care?
Oregon mandates that all state-licensed chemical dependency treatment facilities utilize Patient Placement Criteria developed by the American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM). There are a number of different levels of care designated by ASAM, but for outpatient treatment, the important ones are Level One (generally one to two visits per week to the treatment center, designed for individuals who are diagnosed as Substance Abusers), and Level Two (generally three or more visits per week, designed for individuals diagnosed as chemically dependent). The placement in level of care is done based on level of addiction severity.
What is the average length of treatment at ChangePoint?
For alcohol and drug clients entering as Level One, the average length of treatment is about 4-6 months, attending one time per week. For those entering treatment as Level Two, the typical course of treatment is 6-8 months, with the three times per week schedule dependent on the amount of progress shown by the client during the first two months. We follow ASAM criteria for all patient placements, and clients are moved from one treatment level to another as the result of their progress, or lack of progress, in treatment. All treatment decisions at ChangePoint are individualized based on the progress made by a particular client.
